Can social media sabotage your injury claim?

More and more Wisconsin residents are signing up for social media every year. Social media can be a great way to help share your emotions with friends and family members, especially after being involved in a traumatic car accident. However, any knowledgeable attorney will advise you to avoid posting anything regarding the accident because it can affect your ability to receive compensation from an injury claim.

Don’t reveal the settlement terms

Motor vehicle accidents that result in catastrophic injuries could provide some high monetary settlements. Most of the time, when businesses or important people are involved, you’ll be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement. This agreement is signed by both the plaintiff and the defendant, and it states that neither party will disclose any of the information regarding the settlement arrangement. In the event that you take to social media and disclose what the settlement terms are, the other side may be able to take back the settlement award or refuse to award it to you in the first place.

Don’t post incriminating photos or videos

If you’ve been injured in a vehicle accident and are seeking compensation for your injuries, those injuries should be real. In the event that you post photos or videos of yourself doing something that you would be incapable of while suffering from the injury you claimed, you may find that the other party will not provide you with compensation. Rather, they will use those photos or videos against you in a court of law to state that you are not actually injured from the accident. To give yourself the best chance of obtaining compensation, it’s wise to avoid posting on social media during proceedings for your accident claim.

While social media can be a great tool to use to stay connected with those you care about, it can also be a total disaster when used as evidence against you. If you’ve been recently involved in a car accident, it’s best to let your social media accounts rest for a while. If you don’t post anything on social media, you don’t give the other party any reasons to deny your injury claim.
