Subcompacts and Sports Cars Have Highest Rate of Fatal Crashes

Drivers of subcompacts and sports cars in Wisconsin should be aware that these vehicle types tend to have the highest rate of fatal accidents. This was the conclusion of a study by The automotive research firm analyzed the fatal crash rate of model 2013-2017 vehicles and found that, on average, 2.6 of them would be in a fatal crash every billion vehicle miles. However, the average fatal crash rate for sports cars and subcompacts was 4.6 and 4.5.

Moreover, sports cars and subcompacts had six entries each in a list of 14 vehicles that determined to have a fatal crash rate double that of the average. At the top of the list was the subcompact Mitsubishi Mirage with a rate of 10.2 cars per billion vehicle miles. Second was the Chevrolet Corvette with 9.8, and third was the Honda Fit with 7.7. The list ended with the Hyundai Veloster Turbo and Nissan Versa Note, both 5.2.

The study also pointed out that many of the listed vehicles were rated four or five stars by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Several were IIHS Top Safety Picks. As for why subcompacts and sports cars are so prone to fatal crashes, researchers believe that the relative lack of active safety features and the fact that sports cars are built for speed may partially explain the matter.

When motor vehicle accidents are the result of negligence on one side or the other, innocent victims may file a claim against that driver’s insurance company. If their claim is successful, they might achieve a settlement covering their medical expenses, vehicle repair costs and other losses. However, it may be wise for them to consult a lawyer and hire him or her for negotiations and other crucial steps. The lawyer might, in turn, hire crash investigators to assist.
