Wisconsin fatal collisions: Support for grieving families
If you unexpectedly lose a loved one in a fatal Wisconsin car accident, your life may never be the same. Only those who have lived through such tragedies can understand the emotional pain and suffering associated with such incidents. If you were to learn that your loved one’s death was entirely preventable and due only to another person’s recklessness behind the wheel, you may feel frustrated and angry in addition to grief-stricken.
Wisconsin law allows immediate family members to seek legal accountability against a reckless driver who caused a loved one’s death. That can be quite challenging, especially if defense attorneys aggressively try to dispute your assertions. A recent fatal collision in Dane County is an example of a case where there might be grounds for filing a wrongful death claim.
Two cars, three deaths
Although the investigation following the recent crash remains ongoing, officials have already released the following details about the accident:
- One of the drivers was reportedly seen exhibiting reckless behavior on the shoulder of the road, using the gravel strip to pass other vehicles.
- That driver was a 21-year-old male.
- At some point, he apparently lost steering control and careened across the center traffic line.
- The man’s vehicle slammed into another car, carrying a man and a woman, ages 68 and 64, respectively.
- No one survived the accident.
Police say the woman survived the initial impact of the crash and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Sadly, she later succumbed to her injuries. The other two people involved were pronounced dead at the scene.
Those left behind
Such tragedies have long-lasting and far-reaching effects. In this case, the two victims in the car that was hit were in their 60s. Though not reported, it is common for people of that age to have adult children and, perhaps, even grandchildren. Overcoming the emotional sorrow of a reckless driving accident can be very difficult.
If the person at fault is fatally wounded
You may wonder how one might file a wrongful death claim if the person deemed responsible for the accident (as in the case mentioned earlier) does not survive the collision. In such circumstances, the law allows you to file a claim against the decedent’s estate.
